Folks so my son asked his dad for a skate board (we had already promised to get him one) and he told him he has changed his mind to buy him a bicycle instead. He went further to explain that the compound in our house is not much suited for skating, riding a bike will suffice. Papa in his disappointment and determination turns to me! Mind you; I was pounding my Fuufu in my corner pretending not to be following event.
Our conversation below:
Papa: Mum, I really want the skateboard, what can I do to make money to buy it?
Me: Oh is that so, I will buy you a piggy bank and give you the 20ghc Auntie gave you so you can save it.
You can then add on from the money gifts you receive until it’s enough (…he is already carving a response by the look on his face)
Papa: But mum, I don’t mean saving up on gifts, I meant what can I do to earn more?
Me: Papa, I am not sure, think of an idea and let see how we can work with it, and without hesitation…
Papa: I can walk our neighbor’s dogs for a fee (…..by this time, dad is laughing hysterically, and I am also almost laughing out loud)
Folks, at this point I didn’t know what to say to an almost 9 year old determined budding entrepreneur, but I gather my wits…..
Me: Papa, first off we barely know all our neighbors, only wofa and the other neighbor breed dogs, and even for them they have employed people to care for them, besides this is not common practice in Ghana. Please think of more ideas. (we have two dogs..)
Papa: with a frown, but why is dad laughing? Okay how about we mount a Lemonade stand or a juice bar; we could add candies too.
Me: I am not sure our neighbors will buy.
Papa: But our neighbor has one in front of his house and people buy? (he is referring to a momo stand)
Obviously cornered, I agreed to mount a Lemonade stand in front of my gate hoping that our neighbors will buy.
Please be on the lookout for us; Julian’s Bar coming up soon. Thank God, he is going back to school soon ( hmmm school fees sika no so ahye!……… ) otherwise we will not only mount lemonade stand, garage sales and a restaurant will follow too as he is always looking for ways to implement all the ideas in his head thanks to Davinci Kids and Nickelodeon.
This is on a lighter note, but I am happy he is beginning to think outside the box……
